Neuro Ophthalmology
Neuro-Ophthalmology is the sub-specialty of ophthalmology that deals with diseases related to the optic nerve and the brain.
Some common diseases that a neuro-ophthalmologist may see include optic neuritis (inflammation of the optic nerve), optic neuropathy, papilledema (optic disc edema), ocular myasthenia gravis, brain tumors affecting vision, idiopathic intracranial hypertension or pseudo tumor cerebri, unexplained visual loss, headaches and double vision.
We, at Thind Eye Hospital, are equipped with the latest electrophysiology machines (VER, ERG, and multifocal ERG) to diagnose and monitor these complex disorders.

Conditions We Treat
Our neuro-ophthalmologists are experienced in diagnosing and managing a wide spectrum of disorders, including:
1. Optic Nerve Disorders
Optic Neuritis – inflammation of the optic nerve causing sudden vision loss and pain
Optic Neuropathy – damage due to diabetes, ischemia, trauma, or toxins
Hereditary optic nerve diseases
2. Disorders Related to Brain Function
Papilledema – optic disc swelling due to high intracranial pressure
Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension (Pseudotumor Cerebri)
Brain tumors affecting the visual pathways
Stroke-related visual impairment
3. Neuromuscular Disorders
Ocular Myasthenia Gravis
Cranial nerve palsies causing double vision
Abnormal eye movements or nystagmus
4. Unexplained Visual Loss and Headaches
When routine eye tests reveal no cause, neuro-ophthalmic assessment is vital to detect hidden neurological issues.
5. Pediatric Neuro-Ophthalmology
Working closely with our pediatric ophthalmology unit, we manage:
Congenital optic nerve issues
Visual pathway disorders
Pediatric nerve palsies
Developmental visual concerns
Advanced Diagnostic Technology
To ensure precise diagnosis, Thind Eye Hospital offers one of the most advanced electrophysiology and imaging setups in the region, supporting accurate detection of even subtle neurological abnormalities.
Our equipment includes:
VEP / VER (Visual Evoked Response) – evaluates the optic nerve’s function
ERG (Electroretinography) – assesses retinal health
Multifocal ERG – maps localized retinal function
OCT – high-definition imaging of the optic nerve and retina
Corneal Topography, MRI/CT correlation (with radiology partners)
Fundus Photography & Visual Field Testing
These technologies help us diagnose, monitor, and track progression of complex neuro-ophthalmic conditions with high accuracy.
Thind Eye Hospital is recognized for its advanced diagnostic and therapeutic facilities and leadership in ophthalmic techniques across North India.
