Academics

DNB Ophthalmology

The value of medical education is paramount in Thind Eye Hospital. The goal is to educate future ophthalmologists and support the national effort to expand access to healthcare.

The National Board of Examinations (NBE) has approved THIND EYE HOSPITAL for postgraduate studies in ophthalmology—DNB ophthalmology, which offers two primary seats annually. According to NBE procedure, admission is made through the NEET and counseling. According to NBE guidelines, DNB students receive a stipend.

Students are required to produce a powerpoint presentation on a topic from the current module for once-weekly seminars.

Additionally, the students are rotated through various subspecialty OPDs to hone their clinical abilities. Students are urged to be modest and empathetic
and cultivate a high level of ethics in their work.

Along with teaching students fundamental skills like slit lamp biomicroscopy, direct and indirect ophthalmoscopy, gonioscopy, tonometry, and retinoscopy, the institute also has state-of-the-art equipment like optical biometry, ultrasound (A- and B-scan), optical microscopes, Pentacams, aberrometers, OCTs, and visual field analysis, VR.

Clinical Rotations Across Subspecialties

To provide full-spectrum exposure, DNB residents rotate through multiple specialty OPDs and surgical units:

  • Cataract services

  • Cornea and anterior segment

  • Retina & vitreoretinal surgery

  • Glaucoma clinics

  • Pediatric ophthalmology & squint services

  • Orbit and oculoplasty

  • Refractive surgery (LASIK, SMILE, ICL)

  • Neuro-ophthalmology

  • Emergency and casualty services

Such well-rounded exposure ensures that each student becomes proficient in diagnosing and managing diverse ophthalmic conditions.

Hands-on Skills & Diagnostic Training

DNB students are taught and supervised in all essential ophthalmic examination techniques, including:

  • Slit-lamp biomicroscopy

  • Direct & indirect ophthalmoscopy

  • Gonioscopy

  • Applanation tonometry

  • Retinoscopy

  • Corneal staining & tear film evaluation

  • Pre- and postoperative patient assessment

As their training progresses, students gain hands-on experience in assisting and performing common ophthalmic procedures under faculty supervision.
