Zyoptix FAQ

  • What’s the difference between Zyoptix personalized laser vision correction system for myopia and LASIK?
While non-customized LASIK has been a popular, virtually painless and effective means of vision correction, it does not correct for individual flaws and irregularities of the eye. With the use of wavefront technology, Zyoptix personalized vision correction system from Bausch & Lomb has the capability of providing customized laser treatment that is unique to each eye.

  • Is it possible for someone who wears eyeglasses to see 6/6 or better after surgery?
Yes, in fact, the analysis of data from a U.S. clinical trial of 340 total eyes treated and based on refractive data at a 6 month follow-up examination, found that 91.5% were corrected to 20/20 or better visual acuity without glasses or contacts.

  • Does the procedure hurt?
The Zyoptix personalized laser vision correction procedure is designed to be painless and performed in a matter of minutes with the minimum of discomfort.

  • How quickly will my eyes recover?
You should be able to see better 1 – 2 hours after the treatment has been completed, but you’ll notice the really dramatic difference when you wake up the next day. Even though your sight will be reasonably good soon after Zyoptix, your eyesight will not have recovered sufficiently to allow you to drive immediately. Most people soon get back to their normal routine the next day. You should avoid contact sports and swimming for at least one week.

  • Is it permanent?
Yes, Zyoptix is permanent. One treatment is all that most people need, however, 5 - 10% of patients need some additional fine-tuning (re-treatment) to get the best desired possible vision correction.

  • What will happen immediately after the procedure?
After the treatment, you may experience some after-effects of the surgery. Most of these are quite normal and will disappear quickly. They could include: dry eyes and a gritty feeling after long periods of sleep or in very dry environments. You will be given drops for this. Other temporary effects include hazy, unstable vision and glare with night vision; and possible overall tenderness of the cornea.

  • Common Vision Problems
The human eye is designed so that light enters through the cornea at the front, passes through the internal structures and focuses on the retina, which is the nerve layer at the back of the eye. Errors in this focusing system result in blurred or distorted vision.

  • Am I Nearsighted (Myopic)?
In nearsightedness, or myopia, close objects can be seen clearly while distant objects appear blurred.

  • Am I Farsighted (Hyperopic)?
With farsightedness, or hyperopia, additional effort is required to focus both at a distance and near. This can be difficult, resulting in eyestrain or headaches, or possible blurred vision.

  • Do I Have Astigmatism?
Astigmatism is a condition where the front surface of the eye is not round like a basketball, but shaped more like a football. All images are indistinct or blurred.

  • Am I Presbyopic?
Presbyopia is a natural part of the aging process in which your eye's ability to focus up close has gradually reduced. This generally affects those 40 or older.

All of these conditions can be corrected by altering the shape of the cornea. There are now several different procedures that work in this manner, but accomplish their results by different approaches. Each has its own set of advantages and one may be better for you depending on your particular case.

Thind Eye Hospital has become the area's leader in vision correction surgery. We have established this leadership position through our commitment to you, our patients, and our superior surgical results. We perform only those procedures that have shown the highest levels of success combined with the lowest risks, using the best technology available. For a complete list of the procedures we perform or to learn more about them and which may be best for you, contact a member of Thind Eye Hospital.

  • The Vision Correction Evaluation
Vision correction surgery is not right for everyone. So, a thorough evaluation is necessary to determine your eligibility. At Thind Eye Hospital, we will never recommend a procedure if we are not absolutely certain it is right for your eyes. We are lucky to live in a time in which technology is improving on a daily basis, and many procedures are being developed or enhanced to correct most common vision problems.

In order to be considered for any of our vision correction surgery alternatives, you must be at least 18 years of age and have a stable glasses or contact lens prescription for at least one year.

When ready for an evaluation, please contact the reception to schedule your consultation. As a part of our commitment to you, we will take the time to provide you with a thorough evaluation using the top technological diagnostic tools, like the Zyoptix™ Diagnostic Workstation. Thind Eye Hospital was the first ophthalmic practice in the area to begin using this innovative tool. The Workstation combines two of the top diagnostic tools into one work area; thus, allowing our doctors to more accurately diagnose your eyes than ever before.

The complete evaluation involves a comprehensive examination with specialized testing to determine which procedure will be right for you. This extensive evaluation takes approximately 3 hours to complete and includes a detailed medical history, evaluation of the overall health of your eyes, precise topographical measurements of the corneal surface and accurate determination of the surgical correction needed. During the evaluation, we will discuss the benefits, alternatives and possible complications with you. At any time if you may have additional questions, our highly trained doctors will be available to help provide answers.

If you are a contact lens wearer, we have special requests to ensure the accuracy of your evaluation. Soft daily wear lenses must be left out for at least one week, depending on the type of lens and fit; soft toric or extended wear lenses must be left out for two weeks and rigid gas permeable (RGP) lenses must be left out for at least three weeks prior to the evaluation.

In addition, we use dilating drops in order to view your eye under the best possible conditions. Some patients report blurred vision following the use of these drops. For this reason, we suggest that you ask a friend or relative to drive you home from your evaluation.
